The City of London is a small area in Greater London. The modern conurbation of London developed from the City of London and the nearby City of Westminster, which was the centre of the royal government.

The West End of London is part of the city centre of London in England. The city centre also includes the City of London, which is the financial district, and by some definitions some other districts as well.

East London is the name given to the eastern part of London on the north side of the River Thames.

The East End has always been one of the poorest areas of London. The main reasons for this include the undesirability of living in the direction of the prevaling wind from the city centre in the days of open fires, the large amount of low paid employment in the docks and related industries, and the location of the court and political centre of London on the opposite western side of the City of London.

Docklands is the semi-official name for an area in the east of London, England, comprising parts of several boroughs (Southwark, Tower Hamlets and Newham) in Greater London.

West London includes many of the traditionally fashionable and expensive residential areas such as Notting Hill.

North London includes suburbs such as Hampstead and Highgate, which retain a village atmosphere. North London is hillier than the south, and many of the hills give excellent views across the city.
